CVSO5, otherwise known as the Chemistry Olympiad

Our AP and first-year Chemistry students competed in the CVSO5 (Connecticut Valley Society Olympiad) March 17 at UMASS. The CVSO5 is a 3-part competition and the first step in the Chemistry Olympiad Program that is organized by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This competition included students from 37 schools and 445 students from Western Mass and Northern Connecticut. The first portion is an eighty minute multiple choice test.

Shayna Little, Tanika Douglass, Ben Gorman, and Joey Savarase won the Regional First Prize for their “ANTI-SMOKE” public service announcement on Saturday, May 8th at the WCVB Channel 5 Television Studio in Needham, MA. Their animated video produced in NHS’s audio/video lab was selected from over 100 entries. The contest was sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Four Students Win Gold Keys at Boston Globe Art Contest - May 12, 2010

Four Northampton High School Honors Art students: Stella Cilman, James Rejniak, Emma Sadowski and Samantha Sarvet were recently awarded Gold Keys for their individual visual art portfolios in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Exhibition and Contest. The Gold Key is the highest honor that a student can receive at the state level.

Amy Johnson, our Physics teacher at NHS, was recently informed that she was selected as one of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) Winners of the Inaugural All American Teacher of the Year Awards Competition.
 
This award allows NMSI to recognize “outstanding math, science and English teachers for remarkable contribution to their students and to the teaching profession, are presented to teachers in each state participating in NMSI&r

A Benefit for Haiti

Join us this Friday night, March 19th, in the NHS auditorium for a special concert. All proceeds will go toward the relief effort in Haiti. Tickets are $10 per person and every penny will go directly to Mustard Seed, a local agency with no administrative cost that is sending people directly into the country to provide medical services.

Have you ever wanted to take your dog to a dog show that has categories such as Best Fetcher, Most Photogenic, or A Pooch who can Smooch? If so, the 5th annual March Forth with your Dog this Saturday, March 6th (with a snow date of March 7) is the place to be this weekend. This show, sponsored by the Volunteers in Northampton Schools, is a wonderful opportunity for dogs, and their owners to have a fun-filled afternoon and enjoy the company of canines as well as two-legged folks.

Lights, Action...Enjoy "Bye Bye Birdie" at NHS

That’s right. The spring musical, Bye Bye Birdie,  is rapidly approaching (even though it seems that old man winter is still blowing). On March 11th, 12th and 13th about 130 students at NHS will be showing their talents and entertaining us with their production of a musical made famous in the early ’60s.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25th the Northampton community will be holding a benefit/Celebration of life in the memory of Patti Samolewicz. The goal of this benefit is to raise money to help defray medical expenses that the family has incurred.

We are most grateful to the community at large for the donations that have come in for the Silent Auction. This event will take place at the Garden House at Look Park on the 25th from 3 to 7 p.m. A $25 donation is required.

At Northampton High School, Shakespeare's As You Like It Is On the Move

This year's NHS Theater Fall production will keep both the actors and the audience on their toes: director Stephen Eldredge is taking Shakespeare's romantic comedy As You Like It out of the theater and setting it loose.
 
The play will be performed "promenade" style, with scene locations shifting from the school's traffic circle entrance to a soundstage set in the gymnasium, and finally deep into a mysterious forest...
